We Collectively Watched The Office for 100,000 Years in 2018

Are we all couch potatoes?

The Hollywood Reporter shared that Netflix users collectively watched over 52 billion minutes of The Office in 2018. There are 525,600 minutes in a year. This means we, the Netflix cult, spent 98,934 years worth of time watching a single TV show last year. That’s 42 episodes watched by each user.

There are roughly 100 articles articles citing this number all concerned by the imminent removal of The Office in 2021. None of them are even a bit shocked by the magnitude of our bingeing. We obviously need to get off the couch, stop watching and start doing something with our lives. It’s time to reign in our consumption on all levels and approach life with moderation.

I definitely struggle with the routine of working 9-5, taking the dog for a walk and settling into my couch with my trader joe’s frozen meal some days. After seeing the brutal stats on our constant consumption, I’m even more resolved to back away from screens and connect to the world in a more meaningful way.

Here are some of my favorite alternatives to Netflix bingeing:

  1. Go for a walk or hike or run

  2. Journal (I love this bullet journal)

  3. Read in a hammock (Take your pick at sporty or colorful)

  4. Play a game with friends (My favorites are Exploding Kittens, Catch Phrase and Settlers of Catan)

  5. Give your family/friends a call

Let me know if you’re trying to cut down on TV time too and how you do it in the comments below!
